Wabash River Flooding, July 2002

West Lafayette side, Tapawingo Park - Lamppost underwater That same lamppost under dry conditions View of the State Street Bridge from the Pedestrian Bridge, West Lafayette Side This picture really shows the contrast - compare the water level on the bridge supports View of the State Street Bridge and Railroad Bridge from the Pedestrian Bridge Again, in the previous picture, the water was nearly up to the bottom of the railroad bridge. View of the River and Tapawingo Park from the Lafayette Side of the Pedestrian Bridge

In the previous view, the water went back all the way into the park, and all of the tree trunks were in the water River and the Pedestrian Bridge, Lafayette Side Note the difference in river level and turbulence View of the State Street Bridge and Railroad Bridge from the Pedestrian Bridge, Lafayette Side Again, compare to the previous slide Normally, you can actually walk on the sandbar on this side. View of the State Street Bridge and Railroad Bridge from the Pedestrian Bridge

More comparison More comparison Tapawingo Park trees deep in the water I think that person would have been submerged in the previous slide Wabash Heritage Trail covered with water, under the Pedestrian Bridge, West Lafayette Side Note how far back the river normally is Wabash Heritage Trail covered with water, under the Pedestrian Bridge, West Lafayette Side

Another shot for comparison All of this was either underwater or surrounded by it West Lafayette side, Tapawingo Park - Lamppost underwater That lamppost again - again, note how far back the river actually is I don't think the signs were meant to show bicyclists that the road slopes downhill into the river and that they should turn right, but it sure looks that way! - Tapawingo Park You can barely SEE the riverbank in comparison The water even flooded the playground - Tapawingo Park

Again, note how far away the actual river is from the playground Flooded Playground, Tapawingo Park Flooded Tapawingo Park Anyone for dangerous water polo? Tapawingo Park Normally, falling in the water isn't a concern... The flood waters near the sidewalk next to the ice rink West Lafayette side, Tapawingo Park - Lamppost underwater

Nearly the same view - note that the river is well in the background As you can see, a stroll through the park was sort of out... Normally, there's a trail through the park where there was water in the previous slide View of the State Street Bridge and Railroad Bridge from the Pedestrian Bridge This slide and the previous one show the difference in water level very well View of the Lafayette bank, State Street Bridge The water came up seriously high - usually the top of the river is well below the bridge supports - Pedestrian Bridge

Given the previous picture, you can see how far up the water was The force with which the water hit the supports was pretty impressive too - State Street Bridge In contrast, the water is basically flowing around the sandbar More contrast The trees were seriously deep in the water - Tapawingo Park Union Street Bridge from the Pedestrian Bridge As you can see, the Union Street Bridge is a lot higher up than it looked when hit with so much water

Lafayette and the train depot from the Pedestrian Bridge Note that the water is usually WELL below the level of the station More contrast Pedestrian Bridge from the Lafayette Side - I'm still amazed by the quantity and force of the water Again, normally, there's a lot more of the bridge supports showing Pedestrian Bridge from the Lafayette Side - I'm still amazed by the quantity and force of the water Another shot for comparison

Doesn't come out well in two dimensions, but the water is rarely THIS easy to see from on top of the Pedestrian Bridge You can barely see where the water starts when it's normal Union Street Bridge from the Lafayette Side of the Pedestrian Bridge Quite a difference from the plain of water in the previous shot Union Street Bridge and Tapawingo Park viewed from the Lafayette Side of the Pedestrian Bridge The bridge and formerly submerged park on a dry day The Lafayette Train Platform - note how close the water is to the trail behind it.

This is how far down the river normally is in comparison The Lafayette Train Platform - note how close the water is to the trail behind it. You get some sense of the difference when the river is calm and low here The Lafayette Train Platform - note how close the water is to the trail behind it. Again, you can see how high and close the river was in the previous shot - compare this to the next shot, which has a similar view The Lafayette Train Platform - note how close the water is to the trail behind it. More contrast
